I showed up @ Revolution Hall to find our buddy Stephen sitting at a flagpole turned into smoking section outside and immediately felt the irony of the venue being the old Washington High School. Like a Phoenix it rose from the flames to be a perfect auditorium style concert hall. As we walked down the halls with our beers we couldn’t help but feel a small victory and progress in our ability to affect change or at least be a part of it. Again bringing us to compare it to church on acid without the fear and fire and brimstone. Just soulful energy and enthusiasm to let the worries and dress escape from the reality of daily life. Allah-Las is great for that. A surfy psychedelic rock soup of sound that merits more praise than they receive. Calico Review, their newest and arguably best album yet, was released in ’16. I will go to every show of theirs ever. They played an amazing set including guitars being played behind the back Alla Jimi Hendrix and others. After they bowed out and took off back stage half the crowd took off as my voice only grew louder, “encore, encore, encore!!!” Stephen had made his way up to the open stage and started amping the crowd up as many were dying in energy and enthusiasm. He was met on both sides with staff and was strong armed down the stairs and out the show. Immediately after Andrew and I high fives the fact that Stephen had the balls to get up there Allah-Las came out and jammed it for three more songs, cementing the incredibility of the concert.
The openers Mapache and Entrance were extremely mellow, even Simon and Garfunkel-esk. Will certainly not be the last show I see there. May have to see the Ariel Pink show there coming up on October 19th.
